5MU announces a new look line up
With the passing of radio legend Jeff Sunderland in July, 5MU has been facing the challenge of replacing a breakfast show host who was beloved by the listening audience.
While many put their hand up for the job, station PD Mel Dzelde says she already has the best team in town and the fact that they faced such a tough time together and became closer because of it, only cemented the decision for former afternoon host Adam Connelly to step into the role with ‘Up and Adam’ kicking off Monday August 13.
“"Having lost Jeff "Sundo" Sunderland so suddenly has really been hard for us all in the 5MU Family. Our listeners loved him as much, as we did and have felt the loss too.” Said Mel.
"Sundo" had time for everyone every day. He was always quick with a joke and loved to have a daily laugh with us all. How then do you replace someone like that? For me, there was only one answer...... we can't!”
“It's time for a fresh start and to build on the legacy that Jeff left behind. One constant in the days after Jeff's passing was Adam Connelly. Adam hosted Jeff's tribute show so beautifully, sat next to him in the office daily and like us all, feels so blessed to have been one of Jeff's workmates.”
“Adam's quick wit and love for our 5MU listeners will be a wonderful new way to start each day.”
“Plus, with Claire Murphy and Barry Martin remaining, I feel excited about the fresh new 5MU line up and can't wait to listen in on Monday with you all."
Passionate West Tigers supporter, Connelly has been forced to learn everything South Australian after meeting, falling in love with and marrying a Crow Eater. He now tries to explain NRL to a crowd of AFL loving colleagues while he performs magic tricks learned from his past life as a professional clown.
Connelly says stepping into the slot will be tough but he’s excited for the challenge.
“Sundo’s passing has left a big hole in our hearts and a massive pair of shoes to fill. I think the only thing we could do is starting making a new pair of our own.”
“I am so excited to be able to talk to all our wonderful listeners every morning. What a privilege.”
The line up changes don’t stop there with former PowerFM drive host Chris Dzelde switching teams.
After spending 7 years at the helm of the Drive with Dzelde show, Chris will be switching frequencies and demographics to 5MU hosting the AM drive from 2pm to 6pm.
“We are delighted to have Chris Dzelde join the 5MU team. With over 28 years experience in radio and a very well known SA radio voice, we know that Chris will bring with him his own brand of humour, love of music and a few surprises!” said PD Mel Dzelde.
Journalist Claire Murphy will be on air for a little longer with SA Today extended to 10am to 2pm weekdays, while Barry Martin remains with the team as host of the Saturday Sports Show, Radio Classifieds and Sunday Gold.
Power FM SA’s New Look Line Up
With afternoon announcer Chris Dzelde defecting to the AM band, the time has come for the baton to be passed to a new look PowerFm line up.
Moving into the drive spot from Monday August 13 is former 90’s at Noon host Craig Pitman, who will be hosting ‘The Pick Me Up’ from 2pm to 6pm weekdays. Craig says the opportunity to spend time with the audience as they head home from school or work each day is an exciting one.
"Our listeners have been so kind and welcoming as I've moved from weekends and fill-ins, to the "90's at Noon". Now I can't wait to uncover cheeky stories and make silly moments come to life every afternoon. Plus, it's a nice shift after 10 months of playing ONLY 90's music!”
Station Program Director Mel Dzelde says the passing of the baton couldn’t be happening between two more talented announcers.
"With Chris Dzelde moving over to our sister station 5MU, we are delighted to have Craig Pitman take over the afternoons on Power FM. With his enthusiastic, fun-loving style, Craig's the perfect fit to take us into Fitzy and Wippa at Night."
The Power FM breakfast show ‘The Power Pack’ will continue 6am to 9am weekdays, with the talented duo of Kristel Dally and Damon Adams making the PowerFM line up three quarters Australian Radio School graduates!
Between breakfast and drive, Mel Dee will host ‘The Power Thru’.
