The Daily Telegraph reports: Nine Radio is set to be sold to a consortium bankrolled by hospitality billionaire Arthur Laundy as early as Friday morning. The hospitality billionaire emerged as the surprise buyer on Thursday night, having stayed under the radar amid months of rampant speculation about the future of the radio network.
The likes of sports media heavyweight Craig Hutchison and veteran adman John Singleton had been considered the favourites to take over assets that include Sydney’s 2GB and Melbourne station 3AW. A source told The Daily Telegraph negotiations were last night ongoing but an announcement to the ASX was imminent, with the Laundy bid all but certain to prevail.
One of Australia’s richest men, Mr Laundy, 84, is said to be worth about $1.75bn. While the sale price remains unclear, rumours had suggested Nine was asking for roughly $50m.
Nine acquired the network previously known as Macquarie Media in 2019 after taking over Fairfax Media.
The network also includes 4BC in Brisbane and the 6PR station in Perth.
