CBS News in America has shut down its radio unit amid division-wide cuts. CBS News Radio stopped offering its service to its 700 affiliate stations on May 22. This ended the run of around 23,000 editions of the 10-minute signature broadcast, delivered from CBS’ radio network.
Former CBS News staff member Scott Mayman says – “A sad moment for me – after 24 years, I said goodbye to my colleagues at CBS News Radio which has officially signed off, just shy of their 100 years of broadcasting radio news.”
“An historic icon, right around the world. It wasn’t just broadcast in the United States but also here in Australia with moments that remind you of where you were, when a news event took place.”
“So many great names have emerged from this service. We’ll recognise Walter Kronkite and Dan Rather as they graced our TV screens over the years, but also portions of the radio news service that was utilised by so many Australian Radio stations. But not anymore.”
“CBS News Radio signed-off on Friday May 22 (New York Time). The closure of an entire news division has left 64 of my colleagues out of work and a massive hole in our global news service.”
“A gathering was held at CBS Headquarters in New York to mark the final day of broadcasting (four of whom are in the picture).”
“While it’s a sad moment in history, it was also a joyous moment – a chance to reflect on the very proud work of the team. R.I.P. CBS News Radio.”
