Community Rallies Behind Rebel FM’s Ashley Palmero After Cancer Battle

Rebel Radio Network weekend breakfast host, Ashley Palmero, has been overwhelmed by an outpouring of love and support after revealing his battle with cancer earlier this year.

Six months ago, a routine check-up changed Ashley’s life when doctors discovered an aggressive spindle cancer. What was initially thought to be a benign melanoma was later confirmed to be malignant. In July, Ashley underwent surgery to remove part of his cheek, followed by ongoing immunology and chemotherapy treatments to ensure the best possible outcome.

A much-loved member of the Rebel Radio family for over 21 years, Ashley is known not just for his quick wit and warmth on-air with long-time co-host Jake Chapen, but also for his tireless advocacy for mental health awareness. Through fundraising efforts with organisations such as Black Dog Ride, Movember, Beyond Blue, and by launching the Rebel FM Movember Motorcycle Ride and more recently the Steel Horse Ride, Ashley has inspired countless people to speak up, seek help, and support one another.

On Sunday September 1, the community showed just how much that kindness has meant. Friend and fellow motorcyclist Anthony Rafter, together with Ashley’s wife Silvia and his Rebel colleagues, organised a surprise lunch at the Beechmont Tavern.

More than 100 people turned out, many riding in convoy from Yatala Pies and wearing specially designed shirts produced by local business Screen Prince. The surprise walk-and-ride-in left Ashley speechless and emotional as he was greeted by a sea of friends, supporters, and listeners whose lives he has touched.

Ash said: “You never know who is listening to the radio. This shows the power of radio – when listeners and old friends come together. The day was both humbling and overwhelming. Thank you, everyone.”

The event was a powerful reminder of the bonds Ashley has built over two decades – not only with colleagues and friends but with thousands of loyal listeners across the Gold Coast and beyond.
