THE CHRISTIAN O’CONNELL SHOW GOES FOR

History was made in Australian radio on January 19 as The Christian O’Connell Show launched as the country’s first-ever national commercial breakfast program – a single voice connecting Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth every weekday morning.

Christian O’Connell remains the only radio host in the world to have reached number one in two different countries. In the UK, he built an audience of 2.5 million listeners. In Melbourne, he achieved the top spot within 16 months of arriving as an unknown foreigner in 2018. Now, he becomes the first to host a national breakfast show in Australia, fulfilling a dream he’s carried since landing here seven years ago.

Sydney Already Knows What He Can Do|
At the end of last year, Christian and his team took a week out of their Christmas break to introduce themselves to Sydney. It was intended to be a simple hello before the national launch.

Then Bondi happened.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, a stranger from Melbourne wasn’t sure if he should go on air at all. He did. And what followed became something Sydney won’t forget.

“I went to Sydney to introduce myself,” Christian says. “But what happened was Sydney introduced itself to me, sharing its kindness, heart and beauty. In the middle of their grief, they welcomed a stranger into their mornings. It was an incredible week to be a show that offered comfort, support and hope”.”

Radio Done Differently
The Christian O’Connell Show has built its reputation by doing something rare in modern radio: creating genuine human connection. No celebrity gossip. No stunts chasing headlines. No reality TV updates. Instead, Christian and his team, Rio, Patsy and Alex, focus on real stories from real people, building what Christian describes as “a campfire where Australians can gather during both difficult and joyful moments.”

The show has been a morning staple in Melbourne since 2018, known for moments that are equal parts heart and humour; the kind of radio that feels less like a broadcast and more like having coffee with a trusted friend.

In Christian’s Words
Speaking on launching nationally this morning, Christian O’Connell said: “Seven years ago Australians took a chance on a stranger with a simple idea: a positive corner of the dial for grownups. Real stories, real laughs, real connection – no stunts, no gossip, just good company in the morning. Now I get to share what we’ve built in Melbourne with the whole country. I still can’t quite believe it.

You can now hear The Christian O’Connell Show every weekday morning on GOLD101.7 in SydneyGOLD104.3 in Melbourne and GOLD DAB+ in Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane, thanks to Chemist Warehouse, the show’s national foundation partner.
