Ian Cousins, a much loved and very well known Gold Coast radio manager and a prominent businessman, was farewelled by hundreds of friends, family members and business colleagues at the Gathering Church at Tweed Heads on April 29.
Ian was born in Rockhampton and moved to the Gold Coast in the early ’70s and joined 4GG where he went on to become the assistant general manager. He also served as the general manager of Radio 97 Tweed Heads in 1986, then became general manager of sales at Sea FM, Gold FM and later Southern Cross Ten television until 2010.
Apart from his time in radio he had a senior marketing role in the Gold Coast Indy 300 team and for many years ran the very successful Cousins Communications. In his later years he served as an MC and as a civil celebrant and he officiated many ceremonies at the Gathering Church where people gathered on Tuesday to celebrate his life.
Mr Cousins is survived by his wife Brenda and his two sons, Jordan and Elliot. Brenda says it was ‘love at first sight’ and she pretty much knew immediately that he was the man she wanted to marry.
Described affectionately as ‘Sir Lunch A Lot’, Ian passed away at 76 years of age on April 17 at Robina Hospital. For several years he had been in poor health battling cancer as well as coping with Parkinson’s disease.
Many of his former 4GG colleagues were in attendance including announcers Rod Brice, David Burton, John Hurst, Paul Lineham, Gary Boughen, Greg Newman and also Judy Ferber, the former wife of 4GG General Manager Barry Ferber. Nick Scott, one of Ian’s best friends, also was a speaker at his funeral.
