Retired radio announcer Jeff Warden has died at the age of 80 in Tasmania. His last radio role was in 2011 on breakfast at Classic Hits 7AD/7BU/7SD in Tasmania. He retired in November 2011. Jeff worked at many radio stations including 7EX, 5KA, 3UZ, 3XY, 4GG, The Eagle, 6KY and SA-FM.
Jocks’ Journal interviewed Jeff back 2010. See below.
‘Put On The Spot’ Interview
Childhood ambition and nickname
– To play cricket for Australia. (Not achieved!) Nickname “Slim”
Radio training
– Voice production and drama with an Aussie actress in her flat at Hawthorn every Saturday morning. She helped me get my first job because she knew the manager!
First radio station and a memory of your first day on air
– 3HA Hamilton. Went out the back to get the current temperature. No such thing as a temp gauge in the studio, and locked myself out!
Other stations worked at
– The edited version! 7EX, 5KA, 3UZ, 3XY.4GG. The Eagle, 6KY, SA-FM.
Non-radio employment roles (if any)
– Real Estate. In fact I still work part time for Harcourt’s Launceston, as their auctioneer for Northern Tasmania.
An embarrassing radio moment
– Just finished, what I thought was a gritty interview at 5KA, when someone walked into the studio to say we were off air, and none of it had gone to air!
Best radio mate and radio boss (with exception of current station)
– Bill Page and Paul Thompson.
Name a favourite movie, book and concert
– Out of Africa. Just finished reading the Story of Danny Dunn by Bryce Courtney and Rod Stewart at Memorial Drive in Adelaide. Finished the concert by kicking Soccer balls into the audience. (didn’t get one!)
Last time you laughed till you cried
– Just yesterday, looking at something very tasteless and politically incorrect on You Tube!
A pet peeve
– Tassie drivers who don’t use indicators. I think it must be mandatory that when cars are sent to Tassie, indicators are removed!
Favourite modern day gadget (eg mobile phone, GPS, ipod)
– The mute button on the television for ad breaks!
Passions outside of radio
– Trying to keep fit, with walking and bike riding.
Favourite sporting team
– West Coast Eagles. (A hangover from Perth Radio days).
Who makes up the Warden clan?
– Wife Heather and 2 grown ups! Sam and Sanchia, plus grandchild Ben.
Place and date of birth (date, year)
– 24th of May 1942 at Camberwell, Melbourne.
- Jeff below on right from his days at 5AD.

I had the pleasure of working with him at 5AD a really nice, talented man..
Worked with Jeff at 3HA. A little known fact – he was the voice of “Christopher Crow”, a regular visitor to my children’s programme. A long time ago! Frank Clark 3BA
