Former radio boss Steve Robinson is being remembered among colleagues as one of the industry’s good guys, following news of his death this week.
As well as enjoying a long and successful career as General Manager of stations including 3BO, K Rock, 5AD and Melbourne’s 3AK and 3MP, Robinson was also a director at Wesgo and played a significant role in the conversion of regional radio stations to FM.
He was also an accountant and Vietnam veteran.
Radio colleague Steve Woods says he had the privilege of working under Robinson at three Victorian stations.
“Always fair, honest and direct, he was one of the best in our industry.”
The main photo here shows Robinson (seated, centre) Woods and Mike Harris accepting an award for a 40 hour broadcast from the front windows of Myer in Bendigo during the 40 Hour Famine in 1986.
As seen in the above photo, Robinson was always welcoming of industry newcomers, supporting graduates of Jim Barbour’s Commercial Radio course at Melbourne’s Swinburne University.
